hard drive problem

For some reason my hard drive seems to be shrinking.
checking the size of all the components on my hard drive
(including hidden files), I should have about 15
gigabytes of free space, but I only have about 8 GB. This
number does not increase, even when I delete files from
it (so far I've deleted 2 GBs worth of files with no new
free space to speak for it). However, when I install
something new, my free space will always decrease. Why is
this happening? Hope you can help me out. Thanks, Mike
 
Hello Mike,

First of all, it is impossible really for a hardrive
space to shrink ;) . However, you must not forget that 10
% of you total space is being used for system restore (
if you haven't turned it off), and some more more your
virtual memory. In all, it could result to a good 15-20%
of space used not by programs, so it could be the reason
for you problem.
 
Check if system restore is activated, and check space allocated for Virtual Memor
After that run Disk Cleanup and use Eraser or BCWipe to erase unused space

This is a common virus trait, and I would suggest that
you take the time and/or money to perform a thorough
virus and spyware test run on your system. Naturally, if
you don't already have the programs to do these things,
go out and get them now before you allow another poison
to enter your computer. My two suggestions would be
Norton Anti-Virus ($25-60) and SpyBot (free).
