Hard drive powers off

Often, when trying to boot windows, there is an audible "click" from the
computer and the boot hard disk seems to power off.
I have tried increasing the boot time-out to no evail.
What is frustrating is that it happens sparodically. Once Windows
eventually boots the HD works fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks Philo
But the drive its a brand new WD "Raptor" (10krpm). It is noisy though !

90% or more of hardware failures occur within the first 30 days of usage.

Being brand new is no guarantee that it isn't failing. Almost any hardware
or electronic device is most likely to fail either when it's new or when
it's very old.

I can't be sure from your description, but it sounds to me like Philo is
right and your drive is failing.

If you don't want to replace it, fine, but at least make sure you always
have an up-to-date external backup of anything on it you can't afford to
lose. And don't be surprised if you need to recover from it soon.

One of your hard drives is on it's death bed. Time to shop for flowers.

Florist was shut so I thought I would seek further advice.
Windows will always boot off my dodgy hard drive in safe mode.
Is this significant? or should I still look to replace the drive?
I have run all the diagnostics I can find and all say the HDD is ok.
