Michael

I just installed a Seagate 160 gig hard drive and used the
utility that came with it before I could install xp home.
My motherboard recognizes it as a Seagate 160 and during
the utility I had to go through, it said that I could only
use 130gb on windows. XP shows it as that and was
wondering if there was way to make xp see it as 160. I
thought the utility pointed out something that after xp
was installed that I could go back and do something with
it. Any ideas if there is a way to make xp see it as 160?
I do plan on very soon putting in a new motherboard with
either an Athlon64 or FX and wonder if that would have an
affect on doing anything different with my drives. Thanks
for any suggestions.

Hi, Michael.

Drives larger than about 137 GB need to use the relatively new 48-bit
addressing scheme. If your computer is more than a couple of years old, it
probably needs a BIOS upgrade. Also, of course, you should visit Windows
Update and be sure you have SP1 for WinXP - and all the later fixes, too.
With your new hardware, you certainly should have no problems using the
whole 160 GB - and much more! WinXP can handle the much larger drives in
the stores now, and those on the horizon.

There are many (over 5,000) articles about "big drives", which you can find
by asking Google to search for that phrase. I usually point to these two
articles, but they are both over a year old and newer guidance is probably
available:
