my maxtor hard drive has crashed. i have purchased a new seagate 120G. how do
i install it and windows xppro that i have ?.

Hi,

How old was your Maxtor? You do realize that they warranty most drives for a
three year period and you may be eligible for a free replacement, yes?

As to the Seagate, shutdown the system and remove the Maxtor drive.
Physically install the Seagate, making sure the drive jumper (if it's an IDE
drive) is in the correct position (most likely master, but it should match
whatever the Maxtor was). Then boot the system with the WinXP CD, it should
run setup automatically (you'll need your Product Key, so make sure you have
it handy). You may find it necessary to change the BIOS boot order if the CD
is not booted. Setup will offer the opportunity to partition and format the
drive as part of the initial install procedure, there is nothing extra that
you would need to do in preparation.

Your Maxtor has crashed, well you are not alone with that one, freezer time
if you are lucky.
I have had a lot of Maxtor's crash lately, closely followed by Seagate, so
keep the receipt safe.

Was the version of XP on the Maxtor a preinstalled version?

Thank You

hdd was two years old, but the dealer i bought it from has closed. is it
worth contacting maxtor.

have formatted new hdd and tried fresh install of xp pro. nothing. tried 98
boot disc and have use of cd drives. xp install disk in cd drive D:\ . used
boot from cd at startup .
'verifying dmi pool data
boot fom cd :
boot from cd :
C:\>'
also downloaded winxpsp1_exe onto cd but cd tries to load and then returns
to C: prompt

Sounds like a bad CD. Check it for scratched? Is this a retail disk or oem
one? Did the now defunct dealer give it to you?

Nutcase, the disc is retail with legal product key. I have tried it in my
laptop and it loads. I also tried my win98 startup cd in the desktop and it
loads.

Yep. the new hard drive is seagate 120g sata on the desktop. checked cables
and connections motherboard is via. Stumped that it allows win 98 to load and
not xp pro. Old drive was also sata. Should I reformat new drive and try
again.

Hi,

Don't format or even partition the new drive, let setup take care of that.
