Hi there can anyone help on following problem! :

My hard drive recently went corrupt due to a win32 error,
so I bought a new hard drive and installed it in my pc,
tried to setup my copy of windows xp that i bought with
the pc and input the product key I had for it - but it
said that the code was no longer valid?!

Can anyone advise me of how to make my code valid or do I
have to contact Microsoft and get code reset? Am a
relative novice at all this so apologies if this is a
really dumb question.

many thanks any help at all on this!

cheers
Dave

Hi Dave

Do you have an OEM version of XP? If so it will only install onto the
original disk and can't be moved to another disk. How did a Win32 error
physically damage the hard disk?

Well I think the girlfriend was being impatient with the
system shutting down and just held the power button down
to turn it off. This corrupted a file and now I can't get
the PC to boot up - tried going in via XP boot but it ends
up kicking me out with a RUNCHKDSK /F error.

am completely stumped on what to do? Even when I try to
run Windows XP on last Safe setting it kicks me out at the
Windows XP think screen (the knight rider-esque green
light!)

cheers Will

Hi

Holding down the power button shouldn't have done that much damage - I do it
quite often when I can't get any response from a PC - ****although a PC
should not be shut down in that way****.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration - keep tapping F8 after you
reboot? If chkdsk on startup is rebooting, you may have to think about a
'Repair' install, which will mean that you will have to download and
reinstall all Updates that are now on your system:

"How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install"
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Thanks Will,

I have tried to start the repair XP function but it always
stops me from doing so by bringing up a blue screen with
the prompt to run CHKDSK /F and obviously can't run this
unless I get into Windows!

Have also tried last known good configuration and it just
keeps on rebooting, gets to a point on the Windows XP
think screen and just turns itself off.

What is an OMC Xp disc? What is the best way forward? Many
thanks for your help Will

Dave

Hi Dave

You've beaten me on OMC with reference to a Win XP disk. Where did you get it from?

Sorry Will, I meant OEM.

I bought it from a distributor in the north of england who
builds PC's and for optional charge you can buy XP with it
and it comes loaded and you get the disc and code with the
disc.

Hi

An OEM version will only perform a 'clean' install. i.e. all data will be erased when you use the disk. That is why you are being thrown out. I'm afraid that your girlfriend may very well have screwed (sic) your system up. Can you email me.
