Purchase one of the many imaging programs out there and image to a internal
or external hard drive. You can also image to cd/dvd media.

To bacup an entire hard drive including the OS and all applications you
need an imaging utility such as Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image.

I recomend Ghost it is the easist one i have found for making drive images
version 9 + you can use your dvd drive to back up the drive to it.

I've got to ask. What besides files and folders do you have on your hard
drive?

Well, if you want to get down to it, just a bunch of bits actually.
However,
if you do a typical "backup" of files and folders, your registry, hidden
system
files and lots of other things will probably not get backed up
correctly. If
you have a drive failure and need to restore from a "bunch of files"
instead
of a partition "image" you will be paddling a canoe upstream with a
spoon ...

An _active_ operating system and installed applications. Yes, they
reside in folders and files but Carey's habitual lame keyword search
copy paste advice, in this case on using M$'s backup app will NOT backup
the entire hard drive (which the OP asked about). The only way to backup
the entire hard drive is to do so _outside_ the OS and there are many
3rd party (some free) ways to do so. Go ahead and try to backup all the
files and folders on your hard drive using XP's native Backup app and
report back here how much crap it missed. The entire active operating
system, gauranteed, for one.

Carey has a limited attention span, and his replies are triggered by a
small subset of common keywords, which he uses to access his database
of cut-and-paste replies.

I don't think he's a robot, but I DO think he's not much better/useful
than one would be here.

A robot would probably be more useful.

I honestly don't know how he keeps getting awarded the MVP title year
after year. Apparently the nomination criteria is more oriented towards
quantity than quality. He's certainly prolific but from what I've
observed he's got a pretty high failure rate for accuracy. What's even
more troubling is that he never admits when he's wrong and he has no
respect for his peers.
