A drive can have four primary partitions one of which can be an extended
partition. The extended partition can be divided into many logical volumes.

Or to what is commonly called "dynamic partitions" whihc can contain unlimted
numbers of volumes.

The layout of the partition table at the beginning of a hard drive
hasn't changed since the dark ages. Or since hard drives started being
installed in computers, anyway.

There are four slots in that table, so you can create only four
partitions, even on a gigantic disk. BUT one of those partitions can
be an "extended partition". An extended partitions begin with --
another partition table! So, effectively, an extended partition can be
subdivided into any number of "logical volumes". They look, feel, and
act just like regular partitions, EXCEPT that you cannot boot from a
logical volume.
