Hard disk & Win XP

Help please.

I am unable to install windows xp on a fujitsu hard drive. Sometimes the
computer recognises the hard drive and sometimes not!
When I try to use the fdisk after booting from a win Xp startup dos disk,
error message says wrong dos version. How do I determine the dos version on
the winXP start up disk? Ver gives 4.9. Where do I get the fdsik to go with
this version?
Also tried Fujitsu web site and downloaded a utility called 'erase'. It's
supposed to erase the hard disk completely and re-initialise it to 00. But
this crashes half way through. the other utility to determine the state of
the HD (from fujitsu) confirms the HD is okay.

Any help would be appreciated and apologies for the long winded
explanation...probably giving the wrong information!

If your computer does not recognise the hard disk "sometimes" then I would
suspect a hardware fault. If it didn't recognise it at all then I'd suggest
either a hardware fault or an incorrect configuration.

You don't use FDISK to prepare disk partitions for Windows XP. Boot from the
XP CD directly and you get a chance to configure disk partitions as part of
the setup routine.

Again, this suggests a hardware fault may be part of your woes.

Thanks Rob
I did try installing directly from the Cd but it just crashes with a blue
screen mid way.
Also now it doesn't show the option for FAt32 only NTFS.
I'm trying to find a format.com program to format from Dos but it keeps
saying wrong dos version.
Guess I'll google for it...if only I knew what Dos version XP puts on the
Startup disk?

Thanks again

Off-hand I don't. It must be at least the same version used on the Win ME
disks though, whatever that was.
