Hard Disk slows down

Hello guys!.
I have a problem with my PC (Athlon 1900, 1024 RAM). Initially I
thought it was because of Google Desktop search but now happened with
no reason (apparently). When I start in Safe Mode then it is absolutely
fine. My hard disk gets so slow that the mouse gets sticky and a
transfer of 1 GB from one hard disk to another takes 7 minutes. I was
wondering how I can load drivers or software in memory one by one so
that I can see which one is to blame?
Thanks
Zaf

Clean boot would be a good place to start:

MS KB Article ID: 310353

use msconfig to disable all startup items. add them back one at a time until
the problem re-occurs.

How clean is your system from spywar/adware and viruses
That would be the first thing to do clean it up

I strongly recommend these freebies for keeping the system clean

1)spywareblaste
2)Spybot Search & destro
3)Adaware S

A good safe registry cleaner and spyware cleaner to go with those an
to use i
Ccleaner (crap cleaner) Sometimes the registry needs to be cleane
from old lost file pathes and unremoved files and other junk fro
left over programs...This guy would take care of that for you

A good free anti-virus program would be AVG or Avast either one

Google for them ,install them , update them, run them . Use all o
them one right after the other as all are compatable with eac
other

After your system is cleaned then you need to delete the old interne
temp files and compress your HDD....disk clean-up utility is locate
a
start >programs > accessories > system tools

Start it up and check all the boxes and then proceed to "mor
Options" tab and select to clean up the system restore files an
click ok and let the sytem run

The last thing to do would to defrag the computer you might need t
run this option twice if it hasn't been done

It is located in system tools as disc cleanu is

After all that then reboot and see if it is any better. Please pos
back and let us know

Helo guys and thanks for your help.
I have done a clean boot but the problem is still there. The propblem
disappears only when I start on Safe mode with Networking. What's the
difference between Safe Mode and Clean Boot?
I have tried a range of antispyware software and I have permantly
installed AVG (the paid version) and I used Norton AV (the online
version).
The only "cure" I have found so far is to install Windows again but I
consider that my last option.

What Virus Checker are you using? A Virus checker looks at every file being
written/read to disk so could be responsible (see below).

To see if memory leakage is the problem, call up Task Manager, go to the
Process tab - and then look for anything suspicious in the Mem Usage column.

NB - My PC came with Bullguard - and I discovered the hard way that this
application leaked memory. Copying a Gigabyte or so after a re-boot was
fine - but after that the system got slower and slower as it kept trying to
use the Swap File for extra memory at the same time as reading/writing to
disk. Eventually, it locked up with an "Out of Resource" error message.

Short term fix - disable the virus checker before an intensive disk write
session. In the longer term, I just changed the AV software.
