Hard disk recognition problem

Originally I had two hard disks, 0 and 1.

Disk 0 contains the XP Pro system files and Disk 1 contains data only. Both
of them were NTFS formatted.

Later Disk 0 crashed and a new disk, Disk 0' was added and a new copy of XP
Pro was installed on it.

Now the new XP Pro cannot recognise Disk 1. In the disk administrator, it
shows that the Disk 1 is "dyname and foreign". I am sure that Disk 1 is
working properly and has no problem.

How can I make the new XP Pro recognise the old Disk 1? Please advise.

Hi, Forum.

In Disk Management, click Help. Then search for "foreign disks" and see
what it says. And remember that WinXP doesn't know if you are moving that
disk from another computer, or simply reinstalling it differently into the
original computer.

Taken from a help file under Microsoft Management Console - Foreign Disk
Status:

The Foreign status occurs when you move a dynamic disk to the local computer
from another computer running Windows 2000, or Windows XP Professional. The
Foreign status can also occur on computers running Windows XP Home Edition
that are configured to dual-boot with another operating system that uses
dynamic disks (such as Windows 2000 Professional). Dynamic disks are not
supported on Windows XP Home Edition or on portable computers. A warning
icon appears on disks that display the Foreign status.

To access data on the disk, you must add the disk to your computer's system
configuration. To add a disk to your computer's system configuration, import
the foreign disk (right-click the disk and then click Import Foreign Disks).
Any existing volumes on the foreign disk become visible and accessible when
you import the disk.

In Windows XP Home Edition you cannot access data on the disk, but you can
convert the disk to a basic disk so that you can use the disk. Converting a
dynamic disk to a basic disk destroys all data on the disk.

Thanks for yoiur info.

The solution is to "Import foreign disks", however, will such operation
destroy the existing data on that disk ?

Hi, Forum.

I don't know. I've never had that situation. I've never used dynamic
disks.

Was that a dynamic disk in its former environment? Maybe I'd better step
back and let someone else help you with this project.
