Just bought a computer with XP installed, and occasionally whern I boot up,
it runs something similar to a scandisk, and says that it's checking the
disk for continuity. It then proceeds to make ome changes to the disk which
I think may be re-allocation of files. This would suggest that the disk has
surface errors, but I'm not sure.

Question 1 - Does XP normally do this, or is it likely my HD is faulty?
Question 2 - Does XP have a scandisk program, and if so where can I find
it?

Cheers

XP doesn't do it normally only if you don't shutdown correctly or if it
detects a problem with the disk.

If you right click on your C:\ drive in my computer go to properties select
the tools tab you will see "error checking"

You may need to go back to where you bought it from but be sure you are
using the correct shutdown routine first, i.e. Start button>Turn Off
Computer.

I you want to do a complete scan of the disk, open a command prompt (looks
like a DOS window) and run CHKDSK C: /R. It will say that the disk is
locked and offer to do the check during a reboot. Say "Y" and then manually
reboot. Note that the /R option of CHKDSK can run a long time, because it
actually checks the whole disk. The /F option only checks the file system.
