Hi
my 3 year-old Samsung 30Gb HardDisk was pronounced
"dead" by my IT Supplier. I would like to have a go and
open it up, and see what is making the clicking noises.
Any guides from technically minded people how to do this
and what to expect would be very welcome.

System P-III Windows XP Pro on another Drive
The faulty drive is no longer recognized in the BOIS.

Thanks - just hopeful

1. Remove the stickers that cover some of screws.
2. Remove the cover plate.
3. Connect the disk to the PC.
4. Watch the disk as you turn on the PC.

Opening the disk has in most cases no consequences
other than allowing dust into the case. Since your disk
is already dead, it hardly matters.

As the only moving parts in a disk drive are the disks spinning and the
heads moving. The clicking noise is probably the servos moving the heads
over the disk platters looking for something to lock unto and then
retracting and trying the process all over again. If you want to have a
look just take out the screws that hold the metal cover of the drive, the
side opposite the circuit card.

:

The days of on-site low-level formatting are long gone. LLF can
only be done with expensive equipment in a clean room.

Save your money -- if your laptop's HD was quiet and has now started
to click, it is very likely that you need a a replacement HD.
To prepare, start with a full backup, and make sure you have a
tried-and-true procedure to restore that works on a different HD.
