I am running XP. I have AdSubtract, Free Surfer, and Ad-aware 6.0 running in background. I have installed all Windows updates. XP Firewall is on. I have updated Norton's Antivirus and scanned entire PC. I have emptied Temporary Internet Files, Prefetch, Cookies, and cleared History.

Yet, everry time I leave MSN.com I get hammered by xlime, trafficmp, bannerfarm, adwave, xadso, and dozens of more obnoxious and viscious intrusions.

I can't click to the sites, BUT they appear in the "Taskbar" and valuable real estate within a very small strip of information is stolen!!!

What gives?

The same thing has happend to me. Becuase you cant click on them you might not be able to see this but when i went on certain sites an advert opened up that was in my temporary internet settings.
Make sure you have cleared things like this and your cookies becuase these are soemthimes the adverts them selves stored on your own machine.
Hope it helps.

Those tools are fine, but are in effect layers handling different security
threats. What you need to do is "Harden" your PC so that Active types
of content are restricted.
Mostly, this is due to the IE settings for Zone management. Web sites
are divided into 4 distinct zones. Each zone has a setting that allows or
prevents certain types of things from happening. Your Zone settings
may be too low to stop "Drive-by-Installs" and other aggravations.
The Windows Firewall is a "Basic" firewall that only blocks inbounds
traffic. To enhance your security, I would recommend you get a more
robust Firewall. Many on this NG recommend a free product Zone
Alarm. Personally, I recommend Norton Internet Security 2004. It has
both Anti-Virus, Firewall, Ad-Blocking and Anti-Spam.
Another thing to do is control "Cookies", The best solution is to allow
all 1st party cookies and Reject 3rd party cookies.
Service Pack 2 for XP will address these issues and make most of these
changes the "Default" value for XP. But until that's available, I would
read up on tightening IE's Security Zones, investigate a Firewall.
Currently, there is a big emphasis on "Cleaning Up" Malware, and
that's good. However, it is better to secure the PC, so the stuff can't
get on your machine in the 1st place.

try using the msn pop-up blocker as well.

Either go to www.webattack.com and click on freeware. Under that look for
Popup blockers, they have a bunch that are free. Or go to Google and
download their toolbar. They have pop up blocker thats pretty good and has
other nice features. Or at webattack.com you can download Avant Brower under
Browsers and it has a built in blocker that works great, plus it has tabbed
browsing . It uses IE as the browser and installs on top of it so your
favorites still are there.
