XP Pro will not start because this file is missing. I
downloaded hal.dll to a floppy from another computer, but
the down computer won't read the floppy. So I put an XP
bootable in the floppy thinking the machine would boot
from there..No. I put in the XP Program CD in to the cd
drive and tried to reboot...No. How do I get the hal.dll
in the system files? I can't get it to go past the error
message. No Safe Mode either. Nothing, just links back
to trying to start and stopping with the error message.
Thank you.

I can't even get the computer to go to the floppy or the
CD to reboot with either diskettes or the XP cd on
reboot. As the computer begins to process I see Boot
from CDROM: failure and back to the error message of the
missing hal.dll. The computer was turned off improperly
by someone pushing the power button by mistake. The only
control I have is F8 or delete at reboot. All the boot
options at F8 take me through the exact same
process...computer starts to process and goes to the
error message and stops. I'm game for anything..reformat
the hd, but don't know where to go from here? Any
suggestions are gratefully accepted. Thank you. Linda

You might do better with a Repair Install. See here for info on how to do
that http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

Check the BIOS to ensure that your CD-Rom and floppy are being recognized.
You mention that neither it nor your floppy work. Perhaps this part of the
problem. If either of these is not being detected then it is possible that
you have a loose connection or even a faulty drive.

When you access the BIOS can you set the Boot sequence so that the CD-Rom is
listed before the Hard Drive? You should then be able to boot off your XP
CD. The message "press any key to boot from CD" should be displayed briefly
and you must press a key while the message is displayed or the boot process
will pass to the next device in the sequence.
