hal.dll missing

tried to install xp home on computer that used to have "win me" as os
everything went ok but wont boot and gives message "hal.dll is missing or
corrupt" i've looked at microsoft site but couldn't follow instructions i
must be a bit thick where computers are concerned ;is there a simple
solution that even i could do.
