hal.dll means i lose everything?

hi,
i am getting this error message:

Could not find <windows root> system32\hal.dll
file is missing or corrupted please re-install
a copy of the file.

i have a dell lattitude c800 (laptop), pIII 850 mhz, 390 megs ram, 20
gig HD pre-installed with w2k with a cracked version on of xp
installed over that. i have been using xp for 12 months with only one
other problem, a corrupted registry, which i repaired.

i no longer have even the cracked xp disk.

this problem occurred after degragging.

question is: can i salvage the contents of hard drive? i have no
problem with biuying the xp disk to do that except that it probably
costs a fortune. but i will pay it.
