Grisoft AVG

Hi Folks,

I am running Windows XP HE and using Grisoft AVG. I have all the
latest updates for XP & AVG. Problem is when I boot the computer and
start XP and logon it sometimes takes 3 or 4 minutes before AVG
finishes loading. If I am not paying attention this will cause other
programs I have started to fail. Has anyone else seen this problem. I
can find no help at Grisoft as this is the free version. I am also
running Zone Alarm with all updates but this does not appear to be the
problem, as after the delay AVG always loads first.

There is likely an option to allow the program to do a full scan of the hard
drive when you boot. Look in the options or preferences and disable this
option.

I would change that antivirus. As I said before AVG is
the worst AV program for XP, plenty in flaws. There are
others free better ones.

Please explain? AVG runs fine on this PC with XP Pro.

I run AVG Free on two XP machines, one Home & one Pro. I have not had a
single problem - could you please back up your claim and list the
"plenty in flaws" as I'd like to check that out with the guys at AVG.

No I don't believe I have missed an option as I have checked them all.
This is an intermittent problem as it only happens sometimes. Maybe
about half the time, if it were an option it should happen all the
time.

You may say so. It is not a widely held view

I've used AVG for some time without incident on several machines. I'd
suspect something else in the background causing AVG to load slowly.
Check for spyware/adware using Spybot S&D and Ad-aware.

This should fix you problem. You will need to reboot after doing

Hi Greg,

Worked OK for a few boot ups then started the same old problem. it
takes 3 or 4 minutes to finish loading AVG & Zone Alarm. I have the
latest updates for both. If I shut off AVG or uninstall it all is
well.

You might want to try the free version of Avast. It runs much smoother for
me than AVG did. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Hi Ted,

I did download and install it and it solved my problem. I am just kind
of stubborn and want to find out the problem with AVG and I am used to
it. Is the Avast reliable at catching viruses? Plenty of updates ?

Hi ,

I forgot to mention I am running a dual boot machine with Win98 and no
problems there. Same version of AVG & Zone Alarm
