grinding noise from tower

How can I check to see if I have a bad fan? I have a
grinding noise from tower when I open/save files in
Word. It was suggested I check the fan.

If it's when you open or save files, it's more likely to be the hard drive
clicking away.
If it didn't used to make the noise it could be on its way out (some older
HDDs are just noisy however).
