There are never any gridlines when I open Excel. I have gridlines checked in
everthing I can find but still they are not there. What else can I do?

Check to see if you have a book.xlt template file in your XLStart folder.

Maybe it's set up not to show gridlines.

If you do, you can open it (as a template), change the gridlines to show and
resave it.

Use windows search to look for either book.xlt or xlstart (or both!).

For me (winXP home and xl2003), it's here:
C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

And depending on your upgrade path, you may have multiple locations.
Where do I find that at? I'm new to this.

Open excel
Hit alt-f11 to see the VBE (where macros live)
hit ctrl-g to see the immediate window
type this
?application.startuppath

Make a note of the location.
I have Vista (another headache!) so can't find any of this stuff.

ps. You should have at least one XLStart folder, but you may not have any
templates named book.xlt within that folder.
