I am having problems installing greetings 99 in a new pc
running XP Home. After install the program says that
something is missing and the program will run no further.
Is greetings 99 compatable with XP home?
would appreciate some help.
"99" implies that the program was published in 1997-1998, i.e.,
Win95/Win98 compatible. You can try running the installer itself in
compatibility mode for Win95/Win98 by copying the entire CD to the HD
(assuming it will copy, and into its own folder so you can delete it
later), then right-clicking the setup.exe program and selecting Win95 or
Win98 compatibility mode. However, it is my experience that if an
installer fails in WinXP, there is generally no hope since the installer
wants to install something that XP does not want to install, like
overwriting a protected dll or something like that. There were quite a
number of programs of that genre that interacted with the OS in some
non-standard way, especially replacing system dlls with modified
versions, leading in part to the expression "dll hell" refering to the
inevitable system problems engendered by such practices.
Not an expert, others might have other viewpoints.
