Great crash of 04

Well, actually there were three great crashes on my XP computer. On all
occasions, the computer simply wouldn't load Windows, although there were
obvious signs of life within its soul.

It would start the boot-up process, then come to a stop where it was
supposed to load Windows.

Every time it happened, I had to have Wondows re-installed, consequently
losing huge lumps of data...more importantly, my wife's data.

There must be some sort of way to get around this problem when it happens
next. I've got Norton's System Works on the computer. I have a feeling that
it might be able to help, but not sure how.

All the best,

Phil

That's is more than likely the problem. Remove NSW completely from your system (and I mean all aspects of it), and try again.

I've installed a second hard drive on my machine (drive D:). Having a second
physical hard drive as my data drive means that when I reinstal windows, none
of my data is touched. I have to reinstall the apps, but the data is there
already.

Phil;
You first and most important problem is lack of a back-up plan.
A second hard drive is only sufficient if the data is also on the first.
You MUST have ALL important data in at least two separate locations.

If your hard drive keeps crashing, go to the website of the hard drive
manufacturer and get their hard drive diagnostics.

That is a good plan as long as any important data is also somewhere else.
Simply having your data on drive D is inadequate since a hard drive failure
can cause immediate and permanent loss of data.

I've never had XP crash, and if you have repeated crashes, as Jupiter
and other say, it's probably a hardware issue.

The big thing is to take backups. TAKE BACKUPS! Did I say to TAKE
BACKUPS?? <grin>

As Jupe, says, a second hard disk is not a total solution. That disk
might fail too. A second disk that is NOT USED and to which you copy
or backup everything regularly is better. Windows has a built-in
backup program called NTBackup. It's basic, but works.

Did I say to TAKE BACKUPS? Or I already did, didn't I?

Cheers,

Cliff
