Occasionally while I am using Windows, especially (but not
necesarily) while I am running a program designed
especially for previous editions of Windows / DOS, a gray
rectangle will apear on the screen. It's is completely
featureless (no buttons, title bar, shading), and covers
about 95% of the desktop, leaving a thin strip at the top.
It can be covered by other programs, but leaves a
titleless box on the start bar. How can I prevent this
from happening of close the window once it has occurred?
Thanks in advance if you can help.

Could have something to do with your video card and their drivers. Try to
update drivers with newest version. Another thing to try is to try to run
those programs with different compatibility settings. XP some settings for
older programs. Create shortcut for desired program and check properties of
that shortcut. You should find compatibility options.
