I'm curious as to who is charging for it these days? It was given away
by the original developers.

This site should have links to download any version you want, including
much improved (but still free) "supergravity" versions.

....looks like a downloaded the 2.3 version which may have been payware?

2.3 and 2.5 are the same except that the need to register (which is
impossible now anyway) has been removed in 2.5.
