I updated for SP2 last week and immediately began
receiving VPU Recover error messages. The messages
related to the graphics accelerator. After 3 error
messages my graphics reset to a basic mode. I couldn't
figure out what to do so i did a system restore to the
point created by the update of SP2. I then had no
problems but it was also clear that SP2 wasn't fully on
my machine (I say this because while it showed up in
add/remove programs, the security center didn't exist in
the control panel and windows update said i needed SP2).
After the restore i had no graphics problems. i re-
updated today and have just received my first VPU
Recover. I have an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro graphics card.
Does anyone have any ideas? I am thinking of removing
SP2 and forgetting about it.

thanks for the help.

You could try disabling the VPU Recover function thru the ATI Control Panel.

I have the same card, but I didn't get any problems at first after upgrading
2k SP4 to XP SP2, but this week it started screwing up my games, so I tried
installing the new ATI drivers with the new Catalyst Control Center [.NET
required] but that was even worse. I even totally disabled DEP [Data
Execution Prevention] but that didn't help either. Since I was only testing
out SP2, I reinstalled my 2K image and all was fine, even with the new ATI
drivers.

As long as you have SP1 with all the latest updates installed, and your AV
is up to date, and your computer is behind a good firewall, SP2 is totally
unnecessary.

.
Thanks Kurt. I do already have a great firewall,
spyware detector and anti-virus. I was already leaning
toward your view because no one seemed to answer my
question of why i need this update if I have the above.
I'll be interested to see other replies. I hope an
opposing view comes in with a logical explanation.

As already suggested, turn off vpu recover and also disable fastwrites(if
they arent already). What power supply have you got on your computer? Is
the 9700 share a power connecter or is it on its own? I sometimes get the
same problem if xp is slow to load (which im having probs with just now),
,monitor loses signal for a few seconds then comes back on and works fine. i
have fastwrites and vpu recover disabled on my 9800 pro
