The performance just sucks most of the time, but that is more of an
annoyance than a reason to hate it (IMO). They set the service up so people
can have public and private projects going on, that's just how it is. Many
of the projects that even remotely appear interesting to me require me to
join first. I got sick of requesting to join and often times being
rejected. Also, projects like EnterpriseLibrary shouldn't require
membership unless we are going to contribute to it. Most of the times, I
won't be contributing (I don't have enough time in the world). And yes, the
wait to be accepted is annoying, sometimes there is a 3 week delay,
sometimes an hour. Guess it depends on who does the approval.
Anyway, just about anything I have an interest in on GDN is private and I'm
done applying to be a member for something everytime I do a search. I just
don't use GDN anymore.
The search functionality really leaves a lot to be desired. How often I've
chosen a certain search criteria and no sooner I make one little change in
the search an I have to re-specify my entire search criteria.
Personally, I just don't see value in GDN for me (personally) so I stopped
using it. I did download EnterpriseLibrary and some others but now many of
which require membership and I just am sick of applying for memberships on
every friggin' website I visit these days, from code download sites to
community message boards to private workspaces, I have a master list
accumulated from the last 2 years about over 450 places that I "belong" to
and quite frankly, I'm starting to avoid anything that requires me to "join"
to participate in. It's just too much. What need a universal single
sign-on system that everyone uses but that still doesn't solve the problem I
discuss, I'd still have to become a member and be at the mercy of those
owning the project whether they will accept me.
Perhaps GDN should filter out all the private workspaces by default then I
wouldn't have to worry about it.
Thanks,
Shawn
