dell 3000 shut down wrong. tryed to reboot now will not start up to windows?
blue screen came up telling me windows can not start up,need to run anti
virus or scan disk could not long in to safe mode to do anything so decided
to reinstall windows . went thru set up and windows started intalled
everything and got to 1 min left deleting unused files it stayed there for 20
min. tryed to install 3 or 4 more time keep stoping at the same place.1 min
left deleting unused files! gave up pulled out a old version of windows
and installes that 98. fdisked the drive and formated installed complete.so
tryed to install windows xp pro install complete. so went to install the
oringial windows (home edition) sp2 went thru all set up and stoped at 1 min
left deleting unused files ? darn thing will not take oringial windows again
any clues or help ToniTen

Did you do fdisk /mbr ? It rewrites the master boot record and this is
not done routinely.

Fdisk has an undocumented parameter called /mbr that causes it to
write the master boot record to the hard disk without altering the
partition table information.

You should read the whole article before you try it as there are some
caveats.

I'm old and don't have the best memory, but I believe that there were
some viruses which manipulated the master boot record and stored
themselves in an area of a drive that would not me easily accessible
to users. I could be wrong though and it may not have anything to do
with your problem.

thanks but it sounds like the f disk /mbr is for windows 95/98 mine is a
dell bought in 2005 warranty just ran out do you belive this mybe thay want
to up grade to xp pro had a copy from my old computer that what i am useing
now. would like the oringal back on tho thanks keep them coming ToniTen
 
Everything uses a master boot record.
