Google Desktop Search.

I woke this morning all fresh and ready.

I fired up my laoptop (which has to external 240GB USB drives). After I put
on the java and proceeded with miscellaneous mission, I decided time to go
to work.

Firing up Outlook was "Painful". Not worrying too too much, I fired up
VB.NET to work on a projetc. WOW - horrible. All of a sudden, both USB
drives lit up! SOLID.

Fearing bad stuff, I disconnected from the LAN, drives still going nuts.

After about 10 minutes of shutting down automatically started items
(taskbar), the drives (including my built-in drive) went silent.

Yeah!!!

Upon reflection and a few tests, I determined it was the indexing engine for
Goole Desktop Search (which is quite cool when not chopping away at CPU
cycles and the drives). Anyway, checking the preferrences reveiled nothing
to tune the search parms. Nothing at all to tell it to ignore drives or
folders etc.

Right clicking, allowed me to "Pause" it. Good. I then right clicked again
and I had another option to "Pause 15 minutes more". I waited, and sure
enuff within 20 miutes total - YIKES, major disk stuff again. I killed it -
now all good!

Rule (I guess), don't let the index engine run until say midnight on Dec 31,
3010!!! (kidding... fire it up before you go to bed and I would expect all
to be well)

Just thought other might like to know.

My new dell laptop performs regular cpu cycles. Started doing so as soon as
it was out of the box, before I had installed any software. Dell support
suggested I remove Google Desktop and or leave the machine on for 24 hrs
until Google Index had completed it tasks. I have now done both and still
these annoying cycles persist. Any advice ? Did I not trash the Indexing
engine ? Running XP with 512 RAM.

Cpu cycles? What do you mean exactly? Or do you men hard drive access?
Look in task manager for what's running.
