Good MP3 recording software for podcasting?

I'm looking for some software (preferably free) to create a podcast.

It doesn't have to be high quality. I just want to record some audio news
for some teachers.

Google using the search term, "free podcasting software". You'll get
about 700,000 links. Some of the first ones look most promising and
useful. Here's a link to the search:

Try Audacity.

Then the question becomes "What's a good & inexpensive mic? And how do
I get that into my PC?"

Much more complicated and I don't yet have an answer for that one.
