Good graphics behavior

I recently built a new P4 system using an Intel D915GEV motherboard and
an ATI Radeon RX300 SE-Guru video card. My monitor is a ViewSonic A91f+
which I've have since the summer. I installed the provide drivers for
Windows XP Pro and Windows update noticed an update. I am also using
DirectX 9. My screen resolution is 1280x1024 with 32 bit colour at 75
Hz. I am noticing some odd behavior. When every programme is
minimized, the right and left sides of the graphics image background are
straight. But when a window is opened, both sides bow in. The window's
left and right edges also bow inward, even worse than the background.
If I move the window to be over the left or right edge of the
background, the edges are not true. This is most odd. Any clues what
could be causing it? Any fixes?

Your monitor should be able to fix this problem with your help, my monitor
can make those lines straight..
 
Did you install the updated motherboard drivers from Intel?
You can get the latest updates for the board by entering the
model on www.intel.com

ViewSonic should have a manual on how to adjust the monitor
settings, perhaps using controls on the monitor or using
software.

CRTs always have more distortion at the edges because the
electron gun has to track and compensate unless the screen
is curved to keep a perfectly exact same distance from gun
to all screen pixels, also there is a gun for each color and
they can't be in exactly the same location either.

I know how to adjust the monitor and I have. It is visibly noticable when a
window is opened, the background image's left and right edges bow inward.
When the last window is closed or minimize, the move outward to straighten.
 
I had this system prepped for dual boot with Fedora Core 3. I installed
that tongiht. Fedora saw the monitor and video card. The graphics are rock
solid at the same resolution as looks crappy in XP. I think it is sucky
drivers in XP.
 
Then get some different\updated drivers from ATI and install them
instead. ATI provided the "sucky drivers" that got included with XP.

I seriously doubt it has anything to do with your OS or your
drivers, and everything to do with your monitor. I'll bet it's
simply a matter of trying to display a refresh rate which your
monitor can't reliably handle.

You may be running 1280x1024 on Linux, but I expect the refresh
rate under Linux is either lower or higher than the 75hz your
Windows XP OS is set at. Depending on what limitations Fedora
Core detected in your monitor, it may have set the default
resolution to 1280x1024x60hz or 1280x1024x85hz.

The amount of bowing can vary due to the contents of the image
being displayed. Generally, the brighter the image, the more
it bows outward. For example, if your background is bright,
but the contents of your windows is darker, then you'll get
inward bowing if you had adjusted the monitor on a blank screen.

I recommend you experiment with different refresh rates to see what
your monitor can handle the best. For instance, you may have to
drop down to 1280x1024 at 60hz for a stable image.

While you're at it, try out 1280x960 instead of 1280x1024. Why?
Because 1280x1024 is NOT a 4:3 resolution, and thus it's an
abomination on a standard 4:3 monitor. :p
