I am in the process of building a new PC. I basically
have all my software installed except antivirus. I just
can't decide on which one is the best. People seem to
have trouble with Norton and McAfee, some of the free
one's are lacking features...I don't know what to get!

I am mainly after one with good performance (light on the
system and fast scanning ability)...what do you use?

To secure your computer and prevent possible future security breeches,
consider installing a first-rate, comprehensive, internet security program:

Norton Internet Security 2004
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/nis_pe/

-- Includes Norton AntiVirus 2004
-- Includes Norton Personal Firewall
-- Includes prevention of annoying web pop-ups
-- Includes Parental Controls
-- All in one, easy-to-install package

Hi SB

I've used AVG - www.grisoft.com - for years without any problems. It's free
with free updates.

AVG Free Edition for me also.. After many years with Norton and PC Cillin, I
got tired of the bloated Norton and all the stuff i didn't need, (like a
Norton Protected Recycle Bin,) downloaded AVG and it has caught and handled
several virus problems very well. Updates are pretty regular, you have to do
them yourself, i have never seen a reminder, but, so what? Pay attention to
updating and you won't have a problem..The 'look' of the application is easy
to understand and use.. People say you get what you pay for, but, AVG seems
to be another exception to that adage.

Hi

AVG has a scheduler - open the Control Center and then the 'Update Manager'
tab. Personally, I have it disabled and check for updates manually several
times a day.

This article compares four freeware antivirus packages:
http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,113462,00.asp

I use Norton 2003 on my 2.8GHz system, and AVG free version on my older
PIII-500 system.

Something you may find interesting: McAfee is settling a class action
lawsuit by giving away its VirusScan 8.0 for free to U.S. residents who
originally purchased versions 3 or 4 of their antivirus software. They
are going on the honour system, as no verification of prior purchase or
residency is required: http://software.mcafee.com/lcas/

Hope that helps,
Ian.

I've been using Norton antivirus for two years and have
had absolutely no problems with it through Millennium or
XP. Cool thing about Norton/Symantech is they keep you
updated and have a huge knowledge base. I don't use Norton
Internet Security because I felt is was too0 intrusive and
cumbersome...beside XP has a pretty decent firewall built
in. I also use SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, AdAware and
SpyBot (all freeware) to keep the uglies out in the first
place. The web is a dangerous place and getting worse
every year...your really do need reliable protection of
some sort.
