One utility says I have Windows xp professional "whistler". Some time
later I tried another utility, which says I have windows xp "gold".
What is the difference? Thanks.

Sam:

The difference is the wording.

Use "winver.exe" to get the build number and version of Windows.

Start > Run > type in:

winver

then hit Enter.

Whistler was the code name of XP before it was release to the general publish
(under development).

Gold is usually a third party description of the first release of XP (no
service packs installed.) When software is gone "gold", it has been sent
for mass duplication for general release.

Update the utilities and check with winver. You now need SP1(a) before you
can download any updates from Microsoft.

Some OEM utilities seem to have been written while XP Was in pre-release
form and known as "Whistler". They don't appear to have been corrected
when XP was released.

AIDA32 version 3.90 lists OS Code Name as Whistler. Of course this is an
old version of AIDA32. Heck, the newest version of AIDA32 v. 3.93 is an old
version, they do not support it any more. ;-)

I'm running Code Name Memphis. LOL

One utility isn't quite as out-dated as the other. (The one that
reports "Whistler" is the older of the two.)
