Hi! I have a friend that have Windows XP Professional and he would like to by
the upgrade of windows XP home editionl... does anyone here knows if it's
possible to install the updrad of XP home editio if you have the XP pro on
your pc in the first time ???

You can't upgrade from XP Pro to XP Home (actually you woyuld be down
grading), but why would your friend wish to do that? XP professional is used
for business customers, while Home is, as it say's, for home users.
Professional has more features than home. he would be better to stick with
Professional. he doesn't need the home edition

No, you cannot upgrade install Windows XP Home on a machine which already has Windows XP Pro.
Windows XP Pro has more features than Windows XP Home so i dont see any point in downgrading. More

No, that's not an upgrade, it's a downgrade. Downgrades aren't supported. He
can get to XP Home only by doing a clean installation of it.

Why does he want to do this? Does he realize that Home s a subset of
Professional? There are things in Professional that are not also in Home,
but the opposite is not true. He may not need Professional's extra features,
but having them doesn't hurt, and there's no possible benefit to
downgrading.

Transitioning from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home isn't an upgrade; it's a
"downgrade." The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to
format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path
or technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Claude:

If your friend wants XP Home, great. Be aware though that:

1. There is no 'upgrade path' from Windows XP Pro ed. to Windows XP Home ed.
Instead you will be looking at what is called a 'clean' install of Windows
XP Home ed. Any settings etc. of the Windows XP Pro ed. will be lost and
you will have to reinstall any applications and software that's been
installed.

2. Windows XP Pro has all the functionality of Windows XP Home ed. and then
some.

ANYWAY, Windows XP Home is a good operating system. Best if you can use a
Windows XP Home CD-ROM which already contains the Service Pack 2 [SP2]. It
will say on the retail box if the version of Windows XP Home ed.contains
SP2. If it does, you will not have to apply SP2 separately after the
installation.

If not though, you can apply SP2 separately after you have installed
Windows. Be sure to apply SP2 BEFORE connecting to the Internet for the
first time. You might download the full network copy and burn it to CD-R
beforehand from another computer, or you can order SP2 on CD-ROM from
Microsoft at no charge except shipping.

But either way, make sure the copy of Windows XP Home ed. is at SP2 level
BEFORE connecting to the Internet, as otherwise Windows will probably be
compromised with malicious software [and it can happen within minutes].
Earlier versions alone can't defend themselves from these attacks, so really
think about making sure SP2 is installed somehow BEFORE connecting to the
internet for the first time.
