I currently have a home network configured where all the client PCs (wired and wireless) access the internet via a computer connected to a telephone modem. I'm converting to DSL and was wondering whether I should by a second NIC for the main pc to communicate to the home network switch or get a router.

You could use either. The router is the better choice.

A router is best. See: http://home.comcast.net/~bobwbsgs/homenet.txt
