I installed a new piece of hardware today - an external HP movie writer
dc3000.
First problem was everytime the installation wizard said it installed fine
and I clicked ok, the popup saying "new hardware found" would come up. I
ignored that and ran the software. It ran fine, and was in the middle of
transfering VHS tape to DVD. After a few minutes, the computer rebooted
itself. This time upon reboot it gave me the option to use an earlier
configuration, which I chose.

Disconnected the new hardware (from a 4-USB port card). I could restart
WinXPPro just fine. I tried re-installing. This time I get a message
saying I should install WinXP SP1 - which I had already done - it's
automatic to get upgrades on my machine. I guess going back had taken me
back to the earlier state.

So I went to microsoft.com and checked for updates. They were all needed.
I started to download and install SP1 express. Got an error about
update.inf not being found. I couldn't install this.

To try to fix this I decided to try reinstalling WinXPPro from the CD. As
it tried to reinstall I got an error message abot a couple of catalog files
that were missing. Now I'm stuck. I can't get out of the setup loop!
Reboot just brings it up again, with no way to cancel. What can I do now?

Thanks!

Clearly, you have a compatibility problem with the new hardware. Always
check for software and driver upgrades and updates on the vendor's web site
*before* running any hardware Setup routine. Once the hardware is installed,
run the Windows XP Compatibility Check, and see if it finds any problems.
Ask the hardware vendor's tech support about the problem.
As your system was stable before the hardware was installed, and after it
is removed, the culprit is clearly the movie writer in this case.

There is another thread on this, entitled "HP DVD Movie Writer dc3000 Install Problem. It seems to be a common issue here. I spent more time with HP Support on this and still have got nowhere. The drivers installed correctly, but the Mass Storage Device won't startup

I even got the latest drivers on my 4 port usb card, from the manufacturers website, but it made no difference. I'm stuck too

Can anyone from Microsoft get together with someone from HP to work this one out?
