going from a date in a Word doc directly to that date in Outlook

How do I go from a date in a 2007 Word doc directly to that date in 2007
Outlook calendar? In '03, I used to hover over the date and it would pop up
and ask me something like "show my calendar" and then when I clicked on it,
it would go directly to that date in outlook calendar.

You have to enable the "date" Smart Tag.

Go to Office button > Word Options > Add-ins. At the bottom of the dialog,
select Smart Tags in the Manage dropdown and click the Go button. In the
list of Smart Tags, check the Date item (and any others you want) and check
the box for "Show Smart Tag Actions buttons".

Now, when you hover over a date in a document, you should see a small square
with a letter i in a circle. Click that and choose "Show my Calendar".
