Running XP Pro. Is there and advantage/disadvantage to
using Roxio's GoBack 3.1 Personal Edition over XP's
System Restore?

Thanks

Charlie

Do a search on pc mag web site as they did do a review in the last few
months in one of their issues. it might be on their site, but i have no
idea. www.pcmag.com

i also am curious cus i forget, hehe.

Go back is dangerous to use in XP and Windows XP system restore is just a
waste of space and time. Use an Imaging program such as Norton's Ghost or
Drive Image to make a full proof backup point.

Why do you think Go Back is dangerouse in win xp? pc mag said it was way
better then system restore. and they didn't mention any issues with Go Back.

I've used it on 98se, ME, and now XP Home without any conflicts. Saved my
butt on many occasions. It's a very good safety net for your system....,,and
you too!!! However, the 3.0 'personal' version that comes bundled with NSW
'03 is not XP compatible. You have to buy the 3.0 'Deluxe' edition, ($29.95
when I got it), then d/l the XP compatible version from Symantec. You will
be asked for the 3.0 deluxe cd key before you can install the downloaded
version, (3.2.1b 106 USA Update). The download is the full program, not a
patch. I use it on 2 fat32 desktops and a ntfs notebook. All 3 running XP
Home. Whether I build or buy another system, this the one piece of software
I wouldn't be without.

A MAJOR advantage of GoBack over System Restore is that GoBack loads
BEFORE Windows. This is significant in that if there is a problem with
Windows, you can go back in time before the problem (crash, virus, etc.)
occurred. System Restore only loads as part of Windows, which means that
Windows must be working before you can access it. I'm using GoBack
Deluxe with XP and loving it. It has saved my butt numerous times. I
heartily recommend it.

Does GoBack allow selective restore (as does Drive Image) or do you have to
restore the whole image?

GoBack is selective to time/date only. It will restore your computer to the
condition it was in at any available time/date. It will, however, present
you with a list of files which have changed due to the GoBack change. You
can elect to restore files lost as a condition of having Gone Back. You can
also use the file recover ability of GoBack. It can recover a file you have
edited back to an original status. You can overwrite the current file in
its folder or copy the older version to a different folder for comparison.
You can also choose to rename it slightly and restore it to the original
folder. IE An older version of stuff.doc could be restored as stuffA.doc.
