I have windows 98 on my laptop and want to install xp. Before installing, I
removed bunch of programs from the computer and now it is all messed up. I
can't install the xp as the computer doesn't even read the cd drive.
What should I do?

Simple, just bootup from the XP CD and format the hard drive. As it appears that your XP is upgrade version, I suggest make sure you have the CD for Windows 98 or later handy as you will be required to insert it in the drive for few seconds! Once the installation has verified that you have an old version, it will allow you to proceed with the installation.

The only problem I can foresee is when your XP is OEM version in which case it may not allow you to upgrade but it should still allow you to format and do a clean install.

You will need the serial number for XP and so you might want to make use of Micky Mouse stevens' website (http://www.serialarchive.com).

Hope this helps.

I use non Microsoft products wherever possible which requires no activation.

I use Netscape 7.2 as my default browser which has everything I need for my work.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.
