After removing the Swen virus and reinstalling System Restore, I find that I
cannot change the settings on System restore due to "Global Policies." How
do I change global policies?

Ned

I'm assuming you're running XP Pro. Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC
Go to:

Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, System Restore.
Both of these policies here should be set to Not Configured. If they
already are, set them to Enabled or Disabled, and then back to Not
Configured. Just double click each entry to open its properties.

I'm sorry, but I am running XP Home. I have already tried Gpedit.msc to no
avail. I get the message that the file cannot be found.

I think the Swen virus somehow set the global policies for system restore
(and probably other things). However, the concept of global policies does
not seem to be part of XP Home. This is curious.

Any further help would be appreciated.

You didn't specify what version you were running in XP Home, and no
GPEDIT.MSC doesn't exist in XP Home.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore

Look in the right pane for a values called DisableSR and/or DisableConfig
If these values exist, right click each one and select Modify and change its
value to 0 (zero). If they don't exist, right click in a blank area of the
right pane and select New, DWord value and name them as indicated. Leave
them at 0.

You'll need to provide the exact details of the error message. I've never
seen the particular wording that you've used. You may also want to see
www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This small
utility scans your system for startup programs and running processes. It
also allows you to create a log file that can be copied and pasted into a
newsgroup post. The contents of the program window are also copied to the
Windows Clipboard, automatically.

Just in case something is running that's intercepting the call to the System
Restore Configuration utility.
