While you are together see if you can find out why male homosexuals,
who have been the No.1 vector of AIDS in the US for more than 25
years, continue to practice unsafe sex and consequently are
responsible for more than 60% of new cases of the deadly disease,
AIDS, in this country every year.
Good question, Bonney. How about this one: Why are totals and rates of
infections declining among homosexual males at the same time totals and
rates are increasing for heterosexual males and females?
The answer's probably the same: A combination of ignorance, shame and
fear. Most people want to believe it's a "Gay Disease." For example:
If you're a straight mother of two from a traditionally homophobic
background...Why worry? In 2004, 67% of women with AIDS were black.
It's now their leading cause of death between the ages of 25-34.
There's a similar growth of AIDS infections in other minority
communities, for example, Latin Americans.
Let's try this one: Up until 1983, less than 20% of the patients
diagnosed with AIDS were straight men. In 2004, 35% of the AIDS cases
were diagnosed in straight men. Huh?
So Bonney, in the end, I don't want to leave it up to just the GLBT
community to talk about this. I'd rather we all talk about it. Because
as long as ignorance, shame and fear direct this conversation, everybody
will keep thinking it's a "Gay Disease."
