Don't have time to screw around, I need to know if
Outlook 2003 is a useful tool, or not. My initial
reaction is that it's very sluggish for an email client,
and somewhat complicated. It does have potential, but I
don't want to invest the time unless I get some good
feedback. Let me have it straight!

That's a rather difficult question. I think it's plenty useful. However,
what are you comparing it to?

Ask yourself: "Do I need calendaring, task, and contacts in a highly
programmable email client? Or do I just want a simple email (and possibly
news) client?"

If you answered yes to the first one then you'll want to make time to screw
around learning outlook.

I have used OutLook for over a decade, also tried ACT, Lotus Notes
AOL, MSN and CompuServe.

I found OutLook a very easy PIM to use, and at the same time you can
go as far as you want. Many useful add-ons have been written and if
you want to get adventurous it is flexible to that. Even if you choose
to
stay to the very basics, it will satisfy most every need that you have
in
the PIM category. I believe that OutLook has a much larger user
community
that can provide so much more assistance, when it comes to the basics
all the way to the more advanced specific needs that surface. Plus with
all
the books that have been written on it, you can pick the one that fits
your
learning style.

It does not have all the junk that AOL/MSN/CompuServe added to their
GUI's
and I believe the more and more you use it, the happier you will be with
it.
Sometimes the first time it is setup can be a bit confusing, as it can
be for all
new things we try, but as you move past that, your effectiveness and
effiency
increases.

I deal with hundreds of emails a day\week and do not see the "very
sluggish"
or "complicated" environment. It is only as "complicated" or "sluggish"
as you
make it.

I do want to comment on your "Don't have time" and "investment"
statements.
We make "time" for what is important, which are our "investments". As
all things
in life, they are only as good as the time we invest in them. That goes
for any new
things we try, to the older ones that we neglect. IMHO -Randy-

PS: No I am not a salesman for Microsoft.

.

I too have used Outlook for around 10 years, although it
used to be named something else back in the 90's. I'm not
sure what you mean by sluggish but I guess it can be on a
computer with low CPU power, memory, or hard disk space.
I would agree with Diane. It depends purely on what your
needs are. If all you want is a simple email client, then
go with Outlook Express or some other. If you want a
highly configurable, flexible, high featured email client,
contact manager, calendar, then I highly recommend
Outlook. Some people find it intimidating after using
something low featured like Outlook Express, but also find
that after spending a few days on it that they can't live
without it. There is so much you can do with Outlook that
you can't with Outlook Express. I couldn't live without
it.

I must admit. Microsoft Office Outlook is a nice program.
Sure it is not perfect. What is?
The only thing it really lacks is integrated Newsgroup capability.
