Gigabit LAN, slow file copy?

Just wondering if there are any ways to speed up copying files across my
network. Especially small files. I can hit 25% throughput copying large
files, but small ones can drop the throughput below 1%.

Switch is gigabit. Both PC's are running onboard gigabit adapters... nVidia
and Broadcomm. Cabling is Cat5e.

Network is using TCPIP.

Would another protocol help here? NFS or IPX?

File copying through Explorer is the least efficient way to copy files.
Utilities such as ROBOCOPY (available from Microsoft Downloads) use better
algorithms and more network bandwidth.

Turns out my switch is faulty... Swapped it out and speeds are much better
now.
