In WinXP, I can right-click on a photo of various formats, select
properties, then click on the summary tab to add any info I have about the
photo. This works for BMP, JPEG and TIFF. However it does not work for
GIF's. I get a message:

Summary properties are unavailable for the selected source(s).

Is this something to do with the GIF format or Microsoft's support of the
format?

What program do you have set up as the default for handling GIFs? That's
often where the problem lies, an issue with the property page associated
w/that program.

JPEG and TIF (and things like MP3 and AVI ) provide in the formats for
having such things recorded internally to the file, and that is used in
a free way for things like Artist and Title: it is not intrinsic to the
actual data. GIF and BMP do not have any free general area - just a
part of the header where specific numbers are noted (dimensions. color
depth). These are part of the information essential to the content -
otherwise there is no way of knowing whether a picture is 800x600 or
1200 x 400, and is not editable other than through a reformatting of the
file - say a resize by a package. That appears in the Image section of
Properties - Summary - the editable data of other formats appears as
