my computer has started up with gobblygook symbols instead of English letters. I am able to go to system restore, but would like to find out what is causing this, and repair the problem. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem which I can only correct by restoring to a previuos
date, This appears to be wingdind3 fonts but I cannot figure out how to
correct this problem. Hopefully someone can help us.

Hello,
It sounds to me that you are having the same problem I had about a month
ago. I turned on the pc and the English was gone and I found out it was
replaced by the marlett font which you need and should not delete. The
marlett is in a different file from the other fonts and it controls
important functions of windows. It went to this font because my entire font
file had been deleted some how. It was empty. I had to reload the font file
from my XP cd. Then I just had to reset the sizes I wanted. I'm not sure how
it happened but I thought that it was possibly a back door trogen from some
web site that caused it on shut down and my system didn't detect it. Or I
had cleaned up my system the night before and maybe my easy cleaner program
took it out by accident and I didn't notice. I don't know for sure how it
happened, but this is what it sounds like that happened to you. Nick

I found my problem was Mcaffee isk cleanup utility was deleting the registry key for the current fonts so if I used it then shut down I did not have fonts when I rebooted and instead got symbols. No problems after deleting mcaffee utility.

I do not have disc cleanup, but had just run McAfee quick clean. Hmmmmmmmm........ I think McAfee must have had this problem before because Quick Clean is no longer available.

I don't know what the deal with McAfee is, but I haven't been able to
connect to any of their sites--tech or otherwise--for a week or so, and then
tonight I get a message that my McAfee files have been corrupted and that I
should refresh them, or words to that effect, from the control panel. I
tried but I couldn't anything but error messages. I did a remove program on
McAfee and downloaded AVG to see if I in fact do have a virus that attacked
McAfee. AVG found no viruses. Anyone know anything about AVG? I only
downloaded their free version, but if it does better than Norton or McAfee,
I may just stick with them--for a while anyway.

Hello again
I also have the quick clean utility from Mcafee. Seams to be a common thread, and I also used it also the night before. But I did find that after reloading the fonts from the xp cd that it hasn't happened again. So you have a choice on how to fix the problem. Nick

About five minutes ago I posted an e-mail discussing the same font problem. But, after reading your discussion - the light bulb lit. Before my fonts disappeared this morning, I used McAfee QuickClean. Duh.
