I know this is sorta off the topic and is not supported
by Microsoft in anyway possible but my question is
simple. I want to use Norton ghost to clone my system to
another hard disk installed on my system. The problem is
I have files on the destination drive that I don't want
deleted. How do I partition some of the drive without
Ghost deleting any of my stuff? I am new at this stuff
and completely ignorant when it comes to partitions and
stuff but I am not stupid. So please... if anyone could
help... That would be great!

Thanks,

First, it would be a good idea to backup your data--if you have a storage
medium capable of holding the critical data on the destination drive--in
case something goes wrong. That way, you can experiment without fear of
losing your data permanently.

I haven't used Norton Ghost much, so I don't know what kind of features it
has in regards to hard drive partitions. However, another program called
Partition Magic can easily create, delete, and resize existing partitions
without losing data on the hard drive. You may want to try Partition Magic
for setting up an empty partition on your drive, and then ghost to the empty
partition.

I do know that the most recent versions of Ghost support ghosting to network
drives and CD burners. So if either of those is a viable option for you,
then you might want to consider going that way instead of ghosting to a hard
drive that currently contains data that you don't want to lose.

That kind of defeats the idea of cloning. Do you really
want to clone it or is the purpose just to back up an
image of the drive? If you're looking for a backup
consider imaging instead of cloning. You end up with the
same data in the image as you would have in a clone but
it's packed into files that can be stored in an existing
file system along with whatever else you want to store
there.

Otherwise you can (re)partition but remember that most
partition tools are destructive. Partition Magic,
Acronis and some others make tools that can Partition
without loosing data - but they'll warn you to back up
first JUST IN CASE...
