Getting XP loaded laptop to boot

Apropos

I got a laptop hard drive with XP on it to replace a defunct hard drive.

Right now, upon putting it in, XP doesn't boot. The laptop boot screen finishes
then the screen goes blank merely revealing a cursor in the upper left of the
screen. Trying to hit F8 quickly doesn't help.

Using a program a friend has called ERD Commander I was able to view the
contents of the drive. The drive also appears healthy. I even tried restoring
the system to a previous checkpoint. No luck.

Any idea what could be keeping this XP installation from at least booting to the
boot screen? Any idea how to repair it? (I don't have the original XP CD which
came with the install despite this apparently being a legit installation from
another defunct laptop).

Please advise how to get this booting.

Check that the boot order is set correctly to boot from the hard drive.

If that dont work, then borrow a legit copy of XP, use the licence
numbers on the laptop.

You cannot take a harddrive from another computer and install it in
different computer and expect it to work. XP has a built in chec
system to stop that from happening

This also falls under the EULA or end users license agreement tha
Microsoft is so proud of. It is piracy regardless where and how yo
aquired the harddrive, It should not have come with an XP operatin
system on it

If you want it to work then legally, I will tell you that you shoul
buy a new installation disc with a COA (license) and format an
install a clean operating system.

There are others out there that will show people how to do this thin
you ask...not me...not here

Moving a hard drive with XP installed from one system to another
generally requires a repair install - this requires an installation CD
and the license key has to be entered in the process.

Another issue is licensing. Laptop installations are typically OEM and
so per the EULA can't be moved to another system. They are tied to the
first system on which they are installed.

Sometimes it will, but more often a repair install is needed.

Not true. There is no built in "check system". Because the hardware is
different, the installation needs to be modified to work with the new
hardware. Hence the need, normally, for a repair install.
