getting "Windows cannot find '(null)' "

I had a virus for a while which seems to have disrupted
most of the links from my menu and my desktop icons. with
a very few exceptions I always get the above bizarre
error ( the cannot find 'null' error). HELP! Do I need to
reinstall windows?
