Getting to 'safe mode'

Trying to enter safe mode - pushing f8 doesn't do it. Tried switching off
during boot sequence - next boot up goes to the select start up mode screen
but because I'm using an infrared keyboard I can't swirch to the safe mode
option and it times out - defaulting to normal. Any suggestions other than
plugging in a USB keyboard - which I don't have?
 
To clarify what I mean
once I'm in the choice screen the infrared keyboard hasn't kicked in until
it chooses the startup mode. So although I can see the safe mode option I
can't navigate to it
