GETTING TO OUTLOOK

When I get a new mail notification and it asks me "do I want to read the
mesage now". I click yes but it does not go to my default mail program.
How can I get my computer to do this?

Windows Xp sp1
outlook 2002

What does it say in the "E-mail" box when you run Internet Explorer and
click Tools>Internet Options>Programs?
