Getting the software

I just purchased a refurbished laptop. It was sold as a
"No O.S." system, because as a lease turn-in, the previous
user did not return the installation/recovery media. The
COA containing the product key is attached to the underside
of the machine. My question: can I legally install Win2000
from another disk, since I have the prod. key (and, as I
understand it, the software is licensed to the computer
itself). Or, am I just out of luck because the previous
user held onto (or lost, or whatever) the disks? Thanks
for any help.

You have an OS you payed for. How you paid for it is irrelevant as long as it was done legally. You want to install it. Well find something that will install it. It's installed. What more are you concerned about?

One issue is that if you have an OEM Operating System media. You still bought it. But now the issue becomes can you install it on a machine which is not the OEM manufacturer? That is not really a legal issue (some may disagree here. OK). It is more of a will it work issue. Some OEM media will only work on other manufacturers' machines.
