Getting rid of Notepad

I want to dig Notepad out of my copy of XP, forever. Why this pathetic
version of a text editor should be considered a "system" file I cannot
imagine, it is still the same lame program that debuted with Win 3. I once
saw how to do this by deleting the .exe file from Windows and the two
"backup" copies so that it cannot be replaced. For some reason this doesn't
seem to work now, or I am dleting in the wrong order. Can someone tell me how
to do this simple little thing?

You can't uninstall it, AFAIK. But why bother? Why not just install the text
editor of your choice, and make it the default for the file types you wish?

Some applications may depend upon its presence as they do for IE.

There's no reason you can't install your own favorite editor (I use EditPad
Lite) and associate it with .TXT files.

No reason to get rid of it, just don't use it. Actually, Notepad is
excellent to create/edit small ASCII files.

Notepad is hardly pathetic and it's nice to have an old friend around.

I have fancy pants text editors on may machine, but I still use Notepad
for some things because it's fast and clean.

Are you frustrated because you are having trouble using it? I'm sure
the more knowledgeable people here would be glad to give you some tips.

Are you planning on deleting every other file from XP you don't believe
you will use also?

Remember all the questions from a few years ago about how to DELETE Internet
Explorer?

Internet Explorer, Notepad, etc. are like wives; You may use something else,
but you don't kill the original!

As a matter of fact I am planning on deleting a vast amount of what I don't
use. Take a look at bold_fortune.com to see how to cut XP down to size,
around 500Mb instead of 2Gb.

The reason that I want to kill this particular "wife" is that I cannot get
XP to associate .TXT files with Notepad+. I do know about associating file
types with programs, I can browse to find Notepad+ but XP ignores the
selection and reverts immediately to Notepad.

So, the real problem is that your Windows XP is broken and you can't be
bothered to fix it.

I just looked at the Internet oprions and yes, Notepad is selected for HTML.
Is that the problem?

And as for Nooser's snide comment... This is a brand new copy of XP
installed 10 days ago. If it is "broken," it isn't my fault because I haven't
even started pruning yet. Clearly you, Nooser, must be a highly qualified
software engineer otherwise you wouldn't use such a technical term as
"broken," but thanks for your input, it helped a lot.

Can you select something else? Something is wanting to use Notepad. Just
to figure out what.

Can you right click on a .txt file and select notepad+ to open. If so it can
be set for use there. If not you can change it in file types. (edit to use
notepad+)

Well, YOU were the one that said File Associations didn't work. That IS a
function of Windows. So either Windows is broken and you don't want to fix
it, or PEBKAC.

Bob thanks for your input.

In Explorer File Associations, HTML & HTM files are listed as "Opens with
IE."

In IE7 Tools > Internet Options, HTML Editor is listed as Notepad with a
drop down list which has no other options. I guess there is a registry fix to
change this, haven't found it yet.

David.

before you whack something unnecessarily. How are you changing the
association. Are you r-clicking .txt file and then picking change
program, then checking the box for "Always use this program...." then
selecting you text editor?
